Glad to be back

I am happy to be back in school, doing what I enjoy most doing. Teach, and hopefully nurture. I always see teaching as a kind of calling, a sort of passion. I do hope I will continue to grow in skill and knowledge to become a better teacher to better serve the needs of my students.

Sometimes I wonder whether they learn much from me. At the very least, I hope that I am not the cause for anyone to turn away from math with much loathing. I would give anything to win a student over and rekindle his interest in this subject.

If you ask me on the kind of student that wins my admiration and respect, I would not hesitate to pen down a few characteristics that top my wishlist:

a) Humble
b) Perseveres
c) Teachable
d) Compassionate
e) Upright and Honest

Notice that intelligent and clever are not there. They are important, but not critical in my opinion compared to a person's character.

I have also realised that being firm when situation requires it has not drawn people apart. Today I am very pleased with the two FPS teams. They have demonstrated that they can work together. Win or lose, I am already proud of them.

All I want to see, when comes to the crunch, is a group of students who demonstrate great courage, overcome their personal differences and work towards a common good. Fight for each other, never against one another.

When the dust settles, all that remains is the realisation that we have achieved what we once thought was impossible.
